Speaker: Gareth Davies

Gareth Davies is a freelance teacher, teacher trainer and materials developer based in the Czech Republic.

He has been in the ELT industry for 19 years teaching in Portugal, the UK and the Czech Republic. Between 2002 and 2007 Gareth ran a Trinity CertTESOL course in Prague and since 2005 he has worked closely with Oxford University Press, delivering teacher training and developing materials.

Gareth has contributed material to a range of titles including Solutions, Headway, Business One:One and Business Result.

Gareth is also an author of fiction and is interested in developing creative writing ideas for the classroom.

European Writing Competition "What Does an Enlarged EU Mean to You?"

Dear students,

The European Commission has launched a writing competition entitled “What does an enlarged EU mean to you?” targeting young people from the EU as well as from countries in the enlargement process. The winners will receive a two-day visit to Brussels and an e-reader. 

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the biggest round of EU enlargement, with the unprecedented accession of ten countries. Today, the EU perspective is open to Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey.

In this context, the competition will allow young people (aged 15–25) to express their opinions on:

• What can today's European Union of 28 Member States learn from its past to help improve its future?
• What does an enlarged European Union mean to you?

Participants are invited to write an article (max. 700 words) or up to three blog posts (max. 700 words altogether). The competition will be open until 11 May 2014.

National juries will select one entry from each age group (15–18 year olds and 19–25 year olds) for further evaluation by an international jury. The best entry in each category will be awarded the grand prize.

Pokažite svoju kreativnost, snalažljivost i originalnost kroz jednu aktivnost koju ste osmislili i isprobali u učionici koristeći neki od udžbenika iz ponude izdavačke kuće The English Book (Oxford University Press i MacMillan Education). Koristite bilo koji medij i materijal, a nama pošaljite opis aktivnosti uz objašnjenje kome je namenjena, s kojim ciljem je osmišljena, šta je za njeno izvođenje potrebno i na koji način se izvodi (formular za opis aktivnosti nalazi se u prilogu). Možete nam poslati video materijal, ukoliko aktivnost imate snimljenu, fotografije, postere, ili bilo koji krajnji proizvod vaše aktivnosti.
Stručni žiri izabraće tri najbolja rada koja će biti nagrađena putovanjem u Englesku, a pripremili smo još nagrada za učesnike.

GEORGE M. CHINNERY is the Regional English Language Officer (RELO) for Central and Southeastern Europe, based in Budapest. Prior to that, he was Assistant Professor of Faculty Development at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, California. Outside of the government, he has also taught, trained and administered  language language progress in academic and corporate and settings, including the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and the McDonald's Corporation. George has been an English Language Specialist, a Senior English Language Fellow and a Peace Corps volunteer, and has worked in Turkey, India, El Salvador, Russia and Romania, as well as in the U. S. His professional interests include the creative integration of technology in language teaching.
